Marlane Peterson

July 13, 1955 — January 27, 2020

Marlane Peterson, 64, of Mandan, passed away January 27, 2020. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Todd Kreitinger as celebrant. Burial will be on Monday, February 3, 2020 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 31, 2020 from 5:00-8:00 PM at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with a Rosary to begin at 6:40 PM and Vigil at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

On January 27, 2020, Marlane slipped the bonds of her physical body and has gone home to meet her loving Savior. The earthly vessel that was her body could no longer contain the spirit within. The last eight months of her life we watched in wonder as her faith grew stronger and her body grew weaker.

Marlane Rufina Loeb was born in Bismarck, ND, on July 13, 1955, to Teanus and Elizabeth Loeb, the sixth of seven children. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1973 and received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Moorhead State University.

Marlane married Kurt Peterson at Spirit of Life Church in August 1985. They were stationed in Augsburg, Germany, El Paso, TX, Monterey, CA., and Washington, D.C. During that time, she bore two daughters, Elizabeth and Grace, who were always the treasures of her life. They returned to Mandan after Kurt left the Army and built a life filled with blessings, friends, and family.

Marlane worked at Department of Defense Schools in Augsburg, Nixon Elementary School in El Paso, Spirit of Life Parish, Mandan, Cannonball Elementary School on the Standing Rock Reservation, and Fort Lincoln Elementary School in Mandan. She was regarded by her peers as a fun and imaginative teacher, and loved by both staff and students. She would be heard calling after her students, “smell ya’ later!”

A tireless champion of the poor, she served twenty years as chairman of Ixcan Ministries, making numerous trips to Guatemala in support of the women of the Ixcan. There is at least one child named Marlaney in her honor. For all that she was in life, daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, guide, teacher, mentor and lover of all souls, we give praise to God. She personified faithfulness to God by being a spiritual director and companion to many.

Her travels took her to Spain and Portugal, where she walked the Camino de Santiago with her dear friend Monica. She also visited Russia, Finland, most of Europe, Saudi Arabia, nearly all 50 states, Mexico, and Guatemala.

In addition to traveling, reading, walking, bike riding, and gardening she enjoyed watching British movies and shows with her cat, Dash, and daughters.  She was also an enthusiastic sports fan of local sports, the Chicago Cubs, and Green Bay Packers. Many will remember her as “goofy”, energetic, and would do almost anything to make people laugh, like bursting into song, clowning around, and was the life-of-the-party, to ‘get things going.’

Marlane is survived by her husband, Kurt; daughter, Elizabeth (Bradley); daughter, Grace (Sam); siblings, Joan, Janet (Gary), Randy (Harriet), Irvin (Ann), Vivian (Ian), and Don (Yvonne); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marlane was preceded in death by her father Teanus and her mother Elizabeth.
