Darrell Bullhead

September 29, 1946 — June 5, 2022

Darrell Blaine Bullhead, Sr., 75, entered his journey into the spirit world peacefully Sunday, June 5, 2022, at Sanford Medical Center with his family by his side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, June 13, 2022, at St. Peter Catholic Church, Fort Yates, ND, with Fr. Jolly George as celebrant. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery following the service.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 12, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 PM at St. Peter Catholic Church, Fort Yates, with a Parish Vigil/Rosary Service at 7:00 PM.

Darrell was born September 29, 1946, in Bullhead, SD, to Evelyn Bullhead Gabe. He attended Bullhead Day School and went on to graduate high school from McLaughlin, SD in 1966. He enlisted in the Navy in 1967, where he was an aircraft mechanic and was honorably discharged in 1971. Darrell married Imogene Bear King on May 4, 1973, his wife of 49 years. They were blessed with four children. They resided in McLaughlin, SD where he was employed at Indian Health Service as a Force Account Laborer and then moved on to a Construction Inspector until 1981. Darrell and his family then relocated to Fort Yates, ND where he was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation working for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe MR&I Program under the supervision of the late Mr. Ralph Walker. Darrell retired from government service in 2011 and moved to Mandan, ND where he continued working with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe as a tribal employee. He then resigned in 2015 due to health issues but continued as a Consultant for the MR&I Program until January 2016.

Darrell was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend to all. He loved to spend time with his grandsons, Schea and Cole; they were his pride and joy. He also loved sports and was a basketball player for the McLaughlin Midgets in high school. He loved to workout with his children to teach them the fundamentals of basketball and football. He also enjoyed watching sports in the high school, college, and pro-level. He liked spending time at the river with his family and do a little fishing from time to time. His favorite show was “The Sopranos” and eating apple fritters with a cup of coffee.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Imogene (Mandan, ND); children, Nicole (Mandan, ND), Tanya (Kyle, TX), Darrell Jr. (Mandan, ND), Dusty (McLaughlin, SD); his two grandsons, Schea (Fargo, ND) and Cole (Fort Yates, ND); and sister, Tyra (Hot Springs, SD).

He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn; stepfather, Reuben Gabe; sister, Velia Salas; nephew, Dakota Flying Horse; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
