Walter "Wally" Zachmeier

Walter “Wally” Zachmeier, 86, Mandan, passed away, Friday, April 21, 2023, at his residence under hospice care. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 AM on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bismarck with Msgr. Patrick Schumacher presiding. Burial will follow at Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 25 from 4-6 PM with a Parish Vigil at 6 PM at Weigel Funeral Home in Mandan.

Wally was born June 21, 1936, to Harry and Catherine (Jiran) Zachmeier in Mandan. He was the third of 10 children. On August 30, 1958 he married Lila Jahner at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck. Together they had three sons; Steve (Char), Scott (Kim) and Tim (Cindy).

Wally worked for his father until May 1963, when he went to work for Northern Improvement Construction. He worked for over 35 years as a heavy equipment mechanic. He was very innovative in making repair parts if one was not readily available. In his retirement years, he became a master woodworker, making many beautiful pieces of oak furniture and cabinets for family, extended family and friends. Wally was an avid fisherman and always wanted to live along the Missouri River. In 1991, he and Lila were able to build a home North of Mandan “on the river” and was “able to walk out the door and go fishing”.

Walter is survived by his wife, Lila, sons; Steve (Char), Scott (Kim) and Tim (Cindy), grandchildren; Kyle (Heather) Zachmeier, Kristie (Garret) Zachmeier-Kirchmeier and Cody Maier, great-grandchildren; Ryland and Kora Kirchmeier and Kennedy Zachmeier, sister, Loretta (Tom) Landeis and brother, Leo (Jodene).

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Bill, Ed, Jim, Albert, Louie and Tommy and sister Harriet McFerran.

A very special thank you to oncologist, Dr. Wos, Naomi, Paula and the entire staff, Dr. Kraft and staff at Sanford Hospital for the excellent care that was given to Walter. Thank you also to Amber and Kayla with Sanford Hospice.
