Virginia was born February 9, 1940, in Marion, ND, the third of seven children to Albert and Helen Manns. She was raised on the family farm east of Montpelier, ND.

Virginia married the love of her life, Dale Monson, on May 1, 1960. They met at a music festival in Jamestown, ND. The fact that they loved each other to the moon and beyond was no secret. They had two daughters, Vickie (1961) and Voni (1963). They moved from Jamestown, ND to Mandan in 1962, following Dale’s job with Foremost Dairy (which later changed to Cass-Clay Creamery). They made many friends and enjoyed spending time with their friends, camping together as a family, and dancing. They taught their daughters how to dance too! Voni in the crook of Dale’s arm and Vickie between them on Dale’s feet. Virginia’s greatest joy was being with her family, especially all the babies! She took care of her family by cooking, baking, sewing, and gardening.

Virginia and Dale loved to travel. She planned the trips and they were off to most of the western states except for Hawaii along with her daughters and later the grandchildren. When they took Vickie and Voni on trips, they usually visited state parks and visited many relatives along the way. Most of the trips in later years were to Reno, NV, and Oak Harbor, WA to see the grandkids.

Virginia worked at many places – Bell Telephone, Dental Associates, USDA Great Plains Research Center, and the City of Bismarck. Her favorite ‘job’ was being a mom, gardening (picked many a weed), keeping her husband ‘in line’ and taking care of her grandchildren. She was always Dale’s ‘right-hand’ when they worked on projects and built their last home together in 1979.

Virginia was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mandan. She served her church as an elder for several terms, was a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association, worked in the church office, and helped in the kitchen for events at the church.

Virginia was taught by her mother to have faith in God at the First Presbyterian Church of Montpelier. She shared that belief with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Most Sundays, you would find her in church either in the choir, sitting in the pew with Dale, or in later years volunteering to clean the church. There are many memories and special people at the First Presbyterian Church of Mandan that she thought of as friends. Her smile and love will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Mourning her passing is her loving husband of 65 years, Dale Monson; her daughters, Vickie (Doug) Futrell, Mandan and Voni (Richard Weatherford) Brothers, Oak Harbor, WA; grandchildren, Caleb (Melissa) Brothers, Zech Sherman, Briana (Aaron) Fries, Jared Sherman, Arielle (Zach Llewelyn) Brothers, and Brandon and Megan Futrell; great-grandchildren, Elias, Malachi, Wyatt, Lukas, Gideon, and Taliah; her brother, Mick (Cecelia) Manns, Fairbanks, AK; sister, Joyce (Bill) Stevenson, Billings, MT; brothers-in-law, Larry Beasley, Bouse, AZ, Barry McCormack, Reno, NV, Ed (Jean) Monson, Lakefield, MN, Rod (Barb) Monson, Jamestown, ND, and Lorne Monson, Fargo, ND; sisters-in-law, Peggy Manns, Mandan, Donna Monson, Marion, ND, Eileen (Monson) Afdahl, Jamestown, ND, Lois Hofmann, Fargo, ND, and Jude (Mark Cumming) Monson, Clinton, MT; special uncle, Bill Maulding, Montpelier, ND; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her great-grand dog, Jax.

Waiting for Virginia at the Pearly Gates is her granddaughter, Nicole Brothers; parents, Albert and Helen (Berg) Manns; father and mother-in-law, Albert and Lillian (Lee) Monson; brother, Tom Manns; sisters, Myrle Manns, Eileen Beasley, and Connie McCormack; brothers-in-law, Noelyn Monson, Allen Monson, Richard Hofmann, and Gene Afdahl; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lowell and Billie Monson, Wayne and Donna Monson, Bob and Marilyn Burkhardt, Leonard and Arlyce Chadwick, and George and Neldae Frank; and her special aunt, Ethel Maulding.

The family would like to thank Edgewood Vista of Mandan and Caring Edge Hospice for the care and kindness the staff showed Virginia. They would also like to thank family and friends for being so caring, kind, and loving to Virginia.

The family asks that memorials be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Mandan or the Alzheimer’s Association.
