Toby was born January 7, 1948 to Jake and Elsie (Emch) Kitzman in Leith, ND. Toby enlisted in the US Army in 1966 and went to Vietnam in September of that year, receiving the promotion to Sergeant in June 1967. He received three Vietnamese citations and four US Service Awards, one of which was a Purple Heart. Toby received Honorable Discharge in 1971.

Toby married the love of his life, Ella (Berger) Kitzman on June 20, 1980. He worked as a social worker for the US Veterans in New York then transferred to Hot Springs, SD before retiring in 2002. Toby and Ella moved back to Mandan shortly after to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Needing to stay busy after retiring, Toby started lifting weights and won an award for his accomplishments. He enjoyed watching his garden grow and feeding every bird and squirrel in the neighborhood.

Toby loved spending time with his family and his wife; whether it was watching the Vikings or Yankees, listening to Elvis, watching a movie or a run to the casino. Above all else, Toby had a warm heart that he hid very well. He was an inspiration to many; an all-around great person and will always be remembered fondly.

Toby is survived by his wife, Ella Kitzman; children, John (Nikki) Kitzman; Toby (Shari) Kitzman; Angie (Ron) Morrell; Joe (Jill) Emter; Tanya (Bryan) Sleight; his beautiful grandchildren, Heather, Hailey, Tyler, Jadehya, Corryn, Ella, Joe, Bryona, Alyssa, anna, Elsie; great-granddaughter, Madisyn; mother-in-law, Angie Berger; brothers, Kim (Mary Ann) Kitzman, Jerry (Dany) Kitzman and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Duane was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, stepdad, Don Emch and brother, Jay Kitzman.
