Richard was the eleventh child born to Anton J and Monica (Berger) Fleck on August 25, 1946, at the Mandan Hospital. He grew up on the family farm in Fallon, ND. Richard was a quiet child with a gentle soul. He enjoyed riding horses and doing all of the farm chores. He graduated from St. Peter & Paul Catholic School. As a young adult he worked at the turn around for the Mandan Refinery. Richard suffered a brain injury as a young man, and faced enormous challenges after that, enduring hardships that most will never know. He had a good life as an adult, when he was placed with Pride Inc. He lived in various group homes, and later his own apartment with Pride’s assistance. He met many wonderful friends there throughout the years. He worked for Pride doing various jobs, including disassembling recycled electronics. He experienced many wonderful outings and trips, thanks to the wonderful staff. He always looked most forward to fishing, rodeos, and camping trips. Richard loved to spend holidays with his family, and lived a humble life. He faced struggles with mental health throughout his life, and navigated through the enormous changes that have occurred within that system over a span of five decades. In his younger years, he faced the harshness of what mental health care involved. Thanks to advancements in knowledge, he joined Pride in the 1980’s, and it opened up a whole new world for him. The care he received was outstanding, and the family expresses their deepest appreciation for everyone who made Richard’s life a happy and healthy one, you were his second family. Special thanks to Jeanie and Judy, and all the wonderful staff throughout his time at Pride for going above and beyond to influence his life in such a positive way.
Richard will be deeply missed by his siblings; Lenora (Leonard) Haider, Valentine (Doris) Fleck, Clara (Melvin) Beckler, Bernadette (Rick) Warhurst, Melvin (Shirley) Fleck, Leonard (Karen) Fleck; sister-in-law Cecilia (Berger) Fleck-Geiger; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Anton Fleck and Monica (Berger) Fleck; brothers Lucas, Anton, Jerome, Casper, and Alphonse Fleck; sisters Adeline Vogel, Hildegarde Morrell; brothers-in-law Harold Schlinger, Martin Morrell, and Matt Vogel; sister-in-law Maggie (Vogel) Fleck; nephews Arnie Fleck, Tommy Fleck, Harlan Schlinger, Todd Schlinger; nieces Colleen Morrell, Marie Vogel, Linda Beckler, Chris Fleck, Valerie Jones, and Kendre “Shelly” Fleck.
