Ralph A. Berger, 76, Mandan, died October 13, 2013 at his son’s residence in Mandan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with the Rev. Msgr. Chad Gion as celebrant. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Military Honors provided by Mandan VFW Post #707 and American Legion Post #40.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 5:00-8:00 pm at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Ralph A. Berger was born October 5, 1937 to Anton and Rose (Dietrich) Berger in Mandan. He was raised and educated in the Mandan area. After graduation Ralph enlisted in the US Air Force and proudly served his country. When he returned from the Air Force, Ralph attended Dickinson State College receiving a degree in Education. He taught in Almont for one year before becoming the Principal of the Almont Public School. Next Ralph served as the Superintendent for Robinson Schools. Ralph decided to try his hand in the insurance business. He started by providing insurance services for Don Braun and Jerry Schaff. He then started his own agency, Berger Insurance, now Berger and Bohlken Insurance in Mandan.

On August 1, 1969, Ralph married Peggy Thorson in Almont, ND. Ralph was very outgoing and friendly to everyone he met. His faith was very important to him. He was a longtime member of Spirit of Life Catholic Church. Ralph was very proud of his accomplishments with Alcoholics Anonymous and the friends he met there; celebrating 35 years of sobriety this September. Above all, family was the highlight of his life. He never missed a family event for his children or grandchildren, whether it was sports or any other special event. He made sure they knew how important they were to him and how proud of them he was.

Ralph will be deeply missed by his daughters, Brenda (Kori) Schantz, Underwood, ND; Debbie (Jeff Grant) Berger, Bismarck; son, David (Wendy Walby), Mandan; grandchildren, Blake Wetzel, Carter & Cloey Berger, Jack Shaffer, Emily Schantz, Charli Berger and Cainen Fredericks; sister, RoseAnn Griebel, Billings, MT; and brother, John (Rose), Bismarck.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Matt (Sally), Pete and an infant brother, John; sister-in-law, Jean Berger; brother-in-law, Jim Griebel.
