Rachel Miller

August 9, 1953 — June 21, 2018

Rachel Miller, 64, of Raleigh, ND passed away on June 21, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM CDT on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the Flasher High School Gym, Flasher, ND.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2018 from 3:00-8:00 PM CDT at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM CDT. Visitation will continue at the Flasher High School Gym one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Rachel was born on August 9, 1953 in Devils Lake, ND to Alfred (Sonny) and Irene (Greening) Koehn. Rachel graduated from Egeland High School and went on to attend Valley City State College, where she finished in 3 years with a Bachelor of Science degree in English Education. Rachel then earned her Master’s degree as a Library Media Specialist.

For Rachel, teaching was not just her career, but her passion. Rachel started teaching in Flaxton, ND. She then taught High School English for the Department of Defense in Germany for two years. She returned to the United States to a teaching position in Carson, ND near her college friend, Becky Hauge. Over her 40-year career in education, Rachel instilled a love of the liberal arts in her students. She believed that all students needed to know how to speak in front of a crowd to become leaders in their community and was the speech and drama coach for many years.

Rachel loved a good basketball game, a love that she learned from her father Sonny. She often told her children that she had to play with the boys’ team, because Egeland did not have a girls’ team at the time. Rachel spent many hours playing basketball with her children, watching many games from the crowd, and even coaching early in her teaching career.

While at a softball game, Rachel met the love of her life, Oscar E. Miller. They were married on November 23, 1979, at the St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church in Raleigh, ND. Together they have four children, Justin, Loni, Melissa, and Brandon. Spending time with family and friends was a highlight for Rachel and she was looking forward to traveling to spend more time with them in her retirement. Rachel built a home filled with love and laughter. She instilled the value of having a strong work ethic and the importance of family in her children. Her grandchildren were her world and she was able to spend many hours forming life-lasting bonds with them.

Rachel was survived by her husband, Oscar, of Raleigh, ND; her children, Justin Miller, stationed at Landstuhl, Germany, Loni Miller, of Mandan, Melissa (Jason) Neuberger, of Mandan, and Brandon (Sepi) Miller, Huntington Beach, CA; her grandchildren, Adilyn Rachel, Brody, and Evieanna; her sister, Charleen Altendorf, of Minto, ND; and brothers, Charles (Tina) Koehn, of Aberdeen, SD, and David (Jill) Koehn, of Grand Forks, ND.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Irene Koehn; her brothers-in-law, Martin Altendorf, Jerry Brotsky, Ivan Danzeisen; and sister-in-law, Crystal Miller.
