Pauline M. Graner, 86, Mandan, was called home to be with the Lord. She died August 31, 2014 at Sanford off Sunset Care Center in Mandan, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 8, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Edwin Wehner as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery

Pauline was born on August 28, 1928 to Elizabeth (Pfleger) and Paul Messer in Bismarck ND. She attended Mandan High School. Pauline married Richard Graner May 20, 1946 in Huff, ND. Richard’s work took them from Mandan to Fargo, Minot and finally to Minneapolis MN where they remained until his death in 1985. Pauline moved back to Mandan in 1997.

Pauline loved being a housewife and mother, and was an active member of various groups such as Birthday Club, Card Club, Bible Study Group, school PTAS, and Mother Singers of Hamilton School. She was a proud member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Minneapolis where she volunteered for many years. She belonged to the Alter and Rosary Society, and was a member of St Joseph’s in Mandan ND. She also volunteered with the Germans from Russia Society, and Centennial Elementary in Bismarck.

Pauline was very hospitable, often taking in young people who lacked a home. On many occasions her children brought friends home for dinner, for the night, and sometimes longer, while they completed their schooling. Always with an open door policy to anyone who needed a place to stay. Pauline loved to cook and specialized in German recipes – she loved making Borscht. Pauline loved to sing, enjoyed square dancing and regularly went to the American Legion Auxiliary. Her kindness, gentleness, and generosity of spirit endeared Pauline to everyone who knew her. Much loved, she was a true friend with a ready smile and laugh, Pauline will be sadly missed by her friends, family and her “outlaws” as she so lovingly called them.

Pauline will be deeply missed by her daughters Marjean (Bruce) Paul, Chaska, MN; Joan (James) Matheson, Eagan, MN; sons, Richard Jr. (Patricia), Oak Grove, MN, Terence, Spring Valley, CA; Charles and Robert, Sturgis SD, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, her sister, Margie (Messer) Roudebush, Tucson, AZ; step sister-in-law, Millie Graner and many nieces and nephews.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, son Darrell, grandson Steven Graner. Her mother and step father Elizabeth and Andrew Graner, her father Paul Messer, an infant sister, Genevieve; her step brothers and their wives, Eugene & Marie Graner, Leland & Angie Graner; and her longtime friend and companion, Clarence Bauer.
