Patrick Hammerel

Patrick Michael Hammerel, a loving son, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 7, 2026. 

A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, June 4th, 2026 at 8:00am at the Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, with Fr. Josh Waltz presiding.

Patrick was born on April 24, 1942, at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck to Arthur Hammerel Sr. and Bredella Cantwell of Mandan, North Dakota. Patrick attended St. Joseph Grade School and Mandan High School, graduating in 1961. As a devout young Catholic man, Patrick studied for the priesthood at Assumption Abbey in Richardton from 1963–1965. After that, Patrick transferred east to St. Meinrad Seminary until he was called home to care for his ailing father. After people saw what a caring and compassionate person Patrick was, they continued to ask Patrick to be the caregiver providing love and aid to their sick and afflicted dads. Patrick is survived by a brother, John, in California, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Burial of his cremated remains will be held at a later date.

Patrick’s request was that any memorials be sent to St. Joseph School in Mandan or Assumption Abbey in Richardton, North Dakota.
