Margaret "Peggy" Baron, 91, of Mandan, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, in Mandan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. Burial will follow at 12 noon in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Margaret Rose Taghon was born April 1, 1935, in Mandan, the daughter of John and Lottie (Preabt) Taghon. Known to most as Peggy, she was raised and educated in Mandan and graduated from Mandan High School. Following high school, she attended Capitol Commercial College.

Peggy married Matt P. Baron on June 9, 1953. Together, they raised their family south of Mandan in the home they built near the Taghon family homestead.

Peggy began her working career as a private secretary for the Morton County Extension Agent. After her youngest child entered school, she returned to the Extension Office where she worked as an Expanded Nutrition Assistant for approximately six years. She then worked for Social Services as an Eligibility Technician for about six years.

Peggy and her daughter, Colleen, later opened The Art Shop in Mandan, which they operated until 1981. That year, Peggy and Matt moved to Beulah, North Dakota, due to Matt's work. While living in Beulah, Peggy worked in real estate and also helped organize and operate Fabricare Cleaners.

In 1986, Peggy and Matt began traveling to various job sites throughout the country. Their travels took them to many different states, from Maine to Oregon and from Arizona to Michigan. They spent approximately four years living and working in various locations throughout Wisconsin. In late 1993, they returned to the Mandan area and built their home north of Mandan along the Missouri River.

Matt retired in 1995, and the two enjoyed spending much of their time working in their yard and garden. They especially enjoyed growing garlic, which became a specialty of their garden.

Peggy was active in her community and enjoyed being involved with others. She was an organizer and charter member of the Fort Lincoln Homemakers (FCE Club), a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, Custer Flats Ladies Aid Unit #9, and the Mandan Golden Age Club.

Peggy will be remembered for her strong work ethic, her love of family, and the many places and experiences she shared with Matt throughout their life together.

She is survived by her children, Rick Baron of Benson, Arizona; Laura (Robert) Larson of Livingston, Texas; Michael Baron of Bismarck; and Beth Eisenmann of Oro Valley, Arizona; grandchildren, Ben (Angela) Baron of Spokane, Washington; Angela Popelka of Springfield, Virginia; Emily Baron of Omaha, Nebraska; Matthew Popelka of Mandan; Nick (Natalie) Popelka of Mandan; and Jessie (Zach) Eisenmann Parks of Bend, Oregon.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Matt Baron; daughter, Colleen Baron Popelka; her parents, John and Lottie Taghon; and siblings, Robert Taghon and Dolores Wetzstein.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Edgewood Vista in Mandan and Ethos Hospice for the kindness and care they showed to Peggy.
