Loretta McKenzie

Loretta M. McKenzie, 82, Mandan, died March 23, 2016 at Sanford Continuing Care Center off Collins in Mandan.

Services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Messiah Lutheran Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Mark Drews officiating. Inurnment will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 pm on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Loretta was born on May 5, 1933 to Gottlieb and Christine (Gebhardt) Mintz in Monango, ND. She was raised and educated in the Ellendale area where she entered the Ellendale Teachers College and received her teaching certification in 1953. She married James McKenzie on December 27, 1957 in Ellendale. They moved to Belfield, ND and Dickinson, ND until 1963 when they moved to Mandan. Loretta raised her family and took part in her children’s education and activities before going back to work. She worked for the North Dakota Legislative Council as a proofreader and administrative assistant until her retirement in 1998. She loved to travel and going to Washington DC, Pennsylvania and Arizona were among her favorite trips. Loretta enjoyed working in her garden; it was her way to relax. She also liked to do word puzzles and did beautiful embroidery work. Above all her children and grandchildren were the most important things to her and she enjoyed the time she spent with them.

Loretta will be deeply missed by daughters, Jodi (Doug) Gerving, Bismarck, ND and Julie (Nils) Eldagsen, Bismarck, ND; son, James (Cindi) McKenzie, New Enterprise, PA; grandchildren, Nick (Lindsay) Aune, Tessa Gerving, Breanna Gerving; great-grandson, James Aune and son-in-law, Ken Aune, Jamestown, ND.

Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; daughter, Jane Aune; sisters, Olga (Albert) Roesler, Amelia (Morton) Davis, Martha (Conrad) Strand and Alvina (Albert) Grueneich and brother, John Mintz.
