Joseph was born on November 29, 1964, in Shields, ND. He was the son of Christine Cottonwood and George Umber.  Joseph was raised in Cannonball, ND and attended school in Fort Yates, ND.

Joseph, better known as “Shoop”, spent his life working in jobs that he loved; construction, auto mechanics, fencing, grounds keeping, and ranching to name a few. He was a jack of all trades and he especially loved working on cars, he was a great mechanic. He remained good friends with everyone he ever worked with. Shoop loved to visit and if you let him, he would go on for hours telling his life stories. He had a good sense of humor and was quick-witted. Shoop was happiest when he was able to help someone, it didn’t matter who, or what they needed, he would try to help. He loved his horses, and he liked spending time with them, especially when his girls were with him.  He spent many happy years with the love of his life, Glenda, who was taken from him way too soon. Shoop’s greatest enjoyment has always been his family; he was a true family man. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy.

He is survived by his three daughters, Precious Cottonwood, Jodie Cottonwood, and Harley Cottonwood, all of Cannonball; two sons, Desmond Conica and Trevor Conica, both of Cannonball; six grandchildren, Carter, Niaomi, Aaliyah, Angel, Paris, and Pristan, all of Cannonball; seven sisters, Letha Lewis and Wanda Dalton of Bismarck, Delores Lester, Cannonball, Darlene Situran, Little Eagle, SD, Patricia Carry Moccasin, Bismarck, Greta Baker, Fort Yates, and Johnelle White Eagle, Solen, ND; one brother, Harold Umber of Bismarck, ND. He was blessed to be called uncle by many nieces and nephews, he leaves behind many relatives too numerous to mention, and many wonderful friends.

Joseph was preceded in death by his wife Glenda; his parents; his grandparents; and two brothers.
