Johanna “Shindy” Feist, 90, of Bismarck, passed away peacefully at her home on September 30, 2025. In God’s perfect timing, she joined her husband, Andy, in heaven, where together they celebrate their 72nd wedding anniversary.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 6, 2025, at Ascension Catholic Church, 1905 S. 3rd St., Bismarck, with Fr. Russell Kovash celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 1–3 PM on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at Weigel Funeral Home, 309 4th Ave NW, Mandan, with a Rosary and Parish Vigil at 3 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Johanna was born June 5, 1935, in Lehr, ND, the daughter of Christian and Philippiana (Presler) Eszlinger. She attended school in Lehr and in 1951, moved to Bismarck with her best friend, Laverne “Schoky” Stroh. Johanna first worked for Mr. and Mrs. Bill Grainan of Dallas, Texas, stocking oil products.
On September 30, 1953, Johanna married Andrew “Andy” Feist at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck. Andy served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, and together they were stationed in many parts of the world, including Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Okinawa, Vietnam, Alaska, and nearly every state in the US, except three.
During those years of travel, they were blessed with six children: Keith, Bruce, Kathy, Brian, Kelly, and David. After Andy’s honorable retirement from the Army in 1973, the family returned to Bismarck in 1976.
In 1979, Johanna began babysitting, a role that allowed her to be a full-time mom to her kids. She lovingly cared for countless children, many of whom became like family, and especially treasured the time she spent caring for her own grandchildren.
Shindy loved tending to her garden, caring for her yard, and doting on her dogs. She often said, “In the beginning, God thought, if I spelled my name backwards, I could make something wonderful.” Above all, her greatest joy was her family.
Johanna is survived by her children, Keith Feist and his children, Tony Feist, Mario (Hilary) Feist, and Maria (Curtis) Kruckenberg; Kathy (Randy) Puklich and their daughter, Tara (Jason) Aanonson; Brian Feist and his children, Ashley (Neal) Wolf, Hayley, and Micala; Kelly (Daryl) Feist and their children, Mitch and Cody; David (Lee-Ann) Feist and their children, Madison and Morgan; Bruce Feist’s wife and children, (Lisa) and Dakotah Jane, Bruce Jr., and Lester; and many great grandchildren.
Johanna was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Feist; son, Bruce Feist; and grandson, Andy Feist.
