She was the heart of our home and family. She raised three children—Christine, Neal, and Ross—in a happy and loving environment and encouraged them to be thoughtful adults who always put family first. Jean married Tony, the love of her life, and they were just days away from celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary.
Jean was raised in Mandan, ND, where she met Tony when they became neighbors and attended Saint Joseph's Grade School together. They were inseparable from that moment on. Jean and Tony got engaged in 1967 and were married on July 26th, 1969. After being drafted into the Army in 1967, Tony served in Vietnam during that time Jean wrote letters to him every day, which gives you an idea of how strong their love was. Together, they built a foundation of friendship and love that sustained them throughout their lives. Their marriage was a true partnership, rooted in mutual respect, laughter, and unwavering support. Over the years, Jean and Tony enjoyed many friendships, participated in fishing trips, card clubs, and Yahtzee battles, and most importantly, shared countless moments of dancing together.
After high school, Jean started working at the North Dakota State Health Department. She took a few years off to raise her children and later went to work for her brother-in-law Duane and sister Margo at the Medicine Shoppe in Mandan. When Tony became unable to work due to his MS, Jean retired to become his full-time caregiver.
Jean was a proud grandmother to Sydney (27), Cameron (13), Carly (10), and Emmett (6). As a fun GMA, she loved baking, doing crafts (especially their annual Christmas ornament project), taking walks, reading books together and most importantly, listening to music and dancing.
Jean held her Catholic faith very dear to her heart. When she and Tony could no longer attend church, they watched two church services every Sunday from 8 to 10 AM, and everyone knew not to call them during that time.
Jean is survived by her husband Tony; her daughter Christine (Doug) and granddaughter Sydney; her son Neal (Michelle); and her son Ross (Rachelle) grandchildren Cameron, Carly and Emmett. Three sisters: Angie (Ralph) Ziesmer, Sandy (Roger) Stern, and Lyla Lovdal; one brother-in-law, Duane Stegmiller; sisters-in-law Veronica Beckler and Linda Beckler; along with many nephews and nieces.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Leona Schmidt; her sister Margo Stegmiller; her brother-in-law Bruce Lovdal and her nephew Troy Ziesmer; her in-laws Ted and Rose Beckler; her brothers-in-law Leonard and Ted Beckler.
