Jack Hatzenbuhler

Jacob “Jack” Hatzenbuhler, 95, Mandan, passed away on August 10, 2026.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, August 18, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with Fr. Fred Harvey celebrating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Cremation has taken place and visitation will be held from 5-6 PM on Monday, August 17 at Weigel Funeral Home with a Rosary and Parish Vigil at 6 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Jack R. Hatzenbuhler was born on August 1, 1931, to Raphael and Elizabeth (Stein) Hatzenbuhler. He attended a rural school one mile from the family farm through the 8th grade.

Jack met the love of his life, Helen Schmidt, at a wedding dance in New Salem. They were united in marriage on October 19, 1954, at St. Martin Catholic Church in Center. Jack and Helen farmed with his father, Raphael, until they took over the family farm in 1956. Later, their son, Marvin, joined their farm and ranch operation. When he was married in 1979, his wife, Lori became Jack’s partner for countless calving seasons.

Jack and Helen were blessed with three children, Marvin, Marlis, and Pamela. He was proud of his family and his grandchildren. Jack was a gentle and quiet man. He loved to visit and had a gift for talking to anyone. He enjoyed farming, ranching, dancing, and quick trips to Mandan. Every Wednesday, Jack would drop Helen off at the mall before heading to Kist Livestock.

Jack was a farmer through and through. Farming wasn’t simply what he did; it was a part of who he was. He loved the land, kept a close eye on the weather, and especially looked forward to harvest each year. After spending 90 years on the farm, Jack moved into town, but his heart never strayed far from farm life. He always enjoyed hearing about the crops, cattle, and weather and remained interested in how things were going back on the farm.

Jack and Helen shared 71 years together and were side by side every day of their married life. Jack jokingly called Helen his “hired man,” but in truth, they were partners in farming and in life. They enjoyed their final years together at Edgewood in Mandan where they enjoyed activities and made many friends.

Blessed to have shared in his life are his wife, Helen Hatzenbuhler, Mandan; children, Marvin (Lori) Hatzenbuhler, Marlis (Mark) Grove, and Pamela (Ray) Schafer, all of Mandan; grandchildren, Cody (Jennifer) Hatzenbuhler, Chad (Amanda) Hatzenbuhler, Dustin (Heather) Grove, Westin (Mandy) Grove, Sierra (Cameron) Powers, and Justin Schafer (Jake Swan); great-grandchildren, Caden and Brady Hatzenbuhler, Olivia Hatzenbuhler, Lily and Emma Grove, Graysen Grove, and Rhen, Vera, and Mara Powers; siblings, Jim (Lucille) Hatzenbuehler and Lorraine Gerhardt; and sisters-in-law, Betty Schmidt and Yvonne Schmidt.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, John R. (Ida) Hatzenbuhler, Ralph Jr. (Florentine) Hatzenbuehler, Cecelia (Floyd) Mosbrucker, Isabelle (Frank) Schmidt, Lillian (Simon) Schmidt, and two infant siblings, Martin and Rose; and brothers-in-law, Stanley Gerhardt, Raymond Schmidt, Rudy Schmidt, and Joseph (Monica) Schmidt.
