Genevieve Eckroth

December 12, 1924 — May 10, 2014

Genevieve Eckroth, 89, Mandan, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 10, 2014 with her family by her side at Sanford Health in Bismarck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Shane Campbell as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery, Flasher, ND at 2:30 pm.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from 2:00-8:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Women of the Moose Ritual at 6:15 and a Catholic Daughter and Christian Mother Rosary at 7:00 pm followed by a Parish Vigil. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Genevieve “Genny” Hopfauf Eckroth was born to Stanislaus and Amelia (Leingang) Hopfauf on December 12, 1924 in Fallon, ND. She married Peter G. Eckroth on November 10, 1943. Together they raised their 8 children on Pete’s family homestead north of Fallon where they farmed and raised Hereford cattle.

Genny was always an active member of her community and was a strong member of the Catholic Church. She was a member of the Catholic Christian Mothers for more than 35 years. In her younger years she participated with her husband in the American and North Dakota Hereford Association’s, the North Dakota Cowbells (Stockman’s) Association and 4-H Club with her children. She moved to Flasher, ND after the passing of her husband where she began working for the Post Office and cooked for Meyers Café and Flasher Public School cafeteria. She stayed active in women’s bowling leagues and enjoyed bowling for many years of her life.

In 1998 Genny moved to Mandan, ND. She became a familiar face at the Mandan Golden Age Senior Center where she volunteered much of her time and eventually resided. She also volunteered her time at Aid Inc. Thrift Shop in Mandan for many years. When she was not volunteering, Genny enjoyed crafting, sewing, gardening, visiting and playing Bunco or cards with her many friends.

Cooking was Genny’s passion. She was and excellent baker and cook. She enjoyed preparing large meals and baking for her friends and family as well as planning holidays and other gatherings that gave her the opportunity to be surrounded by her children and grandchildren. It was Genny’s proud honor to be the oldest living generation of a 5 generation family.

Genny will be deeply missed by her daughters, Diane (Raymond) Berger, Mandan, Doris (Donald) Schmidt, Mandan and Danielle Eckroth, Glendale, AZ; sons, Roger, Fredericks, CO, Robert (Paulette) Bullinger, Bismarck, Dennis (Pamela), Rapid City, SD, Wayne (Carolyn), Flasher and Bill (Jessica), Mandan; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose (Xavier) Bohl, Francis (George) Bohl, Clementine (Gene) Volk and Agnes (Raymond) Eckroth and brother, Florian Hopfauf.

Genny was preceded in death by her parents, Stanislaus and Amelia Hopfauf; husband, Peter Eckroth; son, Michael; sisters, Magdalina (Jacob) Hellman, Katherine (Joe) Erhardt, Mary Hopfauf, Eva (Adam) Bernhardt, Perpetua (Anton) Bullinger and Loretta Hopfauf; brothers, Anton (Frances), Ralph (Kathryn), Leo (Josephine) and Adam. Also preceding her is daughters-in-law, Cindy (Barth) Bullinger and Dianne (Overlander) Eckroth and grandchildren, Leslie Ann and Justin Eckroth.
