Fidelis Tischmak, 91, Mandan, died December 26, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, December 30, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Ed Wehner as celebrant. Burial will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post #69 of Flasher, following the funeral service.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 29, 2013 from 3:00-8:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4:30 pm and a Parish Vigil at 5:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Fidelis was born on December 15, 1922 to Emanuel and Margaret (Harsche) Tischmak in Grant County, ND. He was raised and educated in Grant County and attended Elgin High School where he was and outstanding athlete in football, basketball and track. He held the record for the 200 and 400 yard dash until the 1980’s when that record was broken. Fidelis also bowled a perfect 300 game. When he was 13 he was accidently shot in the jaw by his brother Mike while they were hunting. Mike slipped going down a hill and the gun discharged, hitting Fidelis in the jaw. He was taken to Bismarck for surgery and spent many months recovering. Fidelis entered the Navy after high school and spent 2 years stationed in Adek, Alaska. Upon his return he married Odelia Frank on October 25, 1948.

He and Odelia farmed and ranched on the family farm at Shields, ND until 2006 and in 2007 moved to Mandan. Fidelis was active in many organizations in Flasher including, Lions Club which he was a charter member, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and was on the board of the Grant County Social Service Board. He also taught school.

Fidelis was a devoted family man and his strong work ethic was instilled in his children. He and Odelia loved to travel and they made trips to Germany and Hawaii and they took a trip every year to the west coast to visit relatives.

Fidelis will be deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, Odelia; daughters, Janice (Thomas) Giese, Carson and Sondra (Brent) Theurer, Mandan, ND; sons, Ken, , Allen (Cindy) and Bryan (Kay) all of Mandan; sisters, Grace Tate, Redmond, OR, Emily (Neal) Rosenbaum, Primeville, OR, brother Peter E. Tishchmak, Redmond, OR; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Marie; his parents; sisters, Susie (Joseph) Blotsky, Julia (Joe) Becker and Lydia (Valentine) Jochim and Frances (Emil) Miller and brother, Mike (Lagotta) Tischmak; brother-in-law, Claude Tate and sister-in-law, Angie Tischmak..

In Lieu of flowers the family requests memorial to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetary.
