Betty was born on October 14, 1919 to Adam P. and Beata (Meuchel) Fitterer in Glen Ullin, ND. She attended school in Glen Ullin through the 8th grade and did childcare and housework for relatives and neighbors until she met the love of her life, Anton A. (Tony) Leingang, whom she married on June 26, 1940 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church near Glen Ullin. Betty and Tony farmed west of St. Anthony where they raised their ten children. Betty was a fabulous cook and baker. She especially enjoyed making German foods. She loved the holidays, especially Christmas, and always looked forward to the “Name’s Day” gatherings on the farm when relatives would come to visit and play cards.

She was an excellent seamstress and sewed most of her daughters’ clothes. She loved gardening and had a green thumb for growing anything. There was always space for flowers among the vegetables. Betty loved the outdoors, listening to the bird’s sing especially Meadowlarks, hearing the thunder from an approaching storm or tending to her garden was always enjoyable to her. She loved to embroider and made many treasures for her family, which she continued to do even at the age of 95. Betty also loved to read, play bingo, cards and puzzles. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching Minnesota Twins baseball which she did right up to her final days.

When her husband, Tony, passed away in 1973, Betty moved to Mandan. She lived across the street from Christ the King Catholic Church where she attended daily Mass. Her strong faith gave her strength and courage to face life’s challenges. Betty enjoyed her volunteer work for RSVP, Aid Incorporated and Christ the King School lunch room. She was an active member of the Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters. She loved to travel and visited many places across the United States going on numerous Senior Citizen bus trips to fun destinations. The highlight of her traveling was when she was able to go to Europe and visit family in Germany. Betty moved to Touchmark in February of 2007 where she lived until moving to St. Gabriel’s Community in July of 2015.

Betty’s faith and family were most important to her. She loved to be surrounded by her family, was proud of her children and loved them dearly. She looked forward to the arrival of each new grandchild and great-grandchild, and cherished their warm hugs and kisses.
