Curt Maas

Curt A. Maas, 70, of Mandan, passed away on July 19, 2026, at CHI St. Alexius in Bismarck, after a courageous but short battle with an aggressive cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 AM on Saturday, July 25, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with Fr. Josh Waltz celebrating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 PM on Friday, July 24, at Weigel Funeral Home in Mandan, with a Rosary & Parish Vigil at 6 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Curt was born on April 27, 1956, in Miles City, MT, to Tony and Helen (Duckwitz) Maas. He spent his early childhood in Missoula, Montana before the family relocated to Hebron, North Dakota. When he was in the fourth grade, they moved to Bismarck. Curt received his GED in 1992 and later attended Interstate Business College, graduating in 1995 with a degree in Computer Accounting.

On July 7, 1978, Curt married the love of his life, Tina Seelye, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Mandan. Although they were never blessed with children of their own, their home was filled with love in so many ways. They affectionately "adopted" many nieces and nephews throughout the years, and remained close through their lives, always showing care, encouragement, and deep commitment to family values. Their home was always a welcoming place where family and friends knew they belonged. Curt and Tina did everything together, sharing a deep bond rooted in love and faith. They cared deeply for one another. Curt often worried about the day Tina would have to continue life's journey without him.

During his working years, Curt was employed at Simonson Station, worked as a mechanic for Nastrom Peterson, spent 6 years at Dynamic Homes, and 14 years at Interstate Diesel until a work-related injury changed the course of his life. Unable to continue in his career, he embraced a new role as the homemaker while Tina worked full-time. He took great pride in caring for their home and supporting his wife, never complaining and always finding purpose in caring for those he loved.

Curt had many interests including fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, and classic cars. His treasured 1971 Plymouth Duster held a special place in his heart. In fact, the Duster was originally Tina's car when they first met. Whether he was simply sitting in the garage admiring it, taking it for a drive, or talking about it with fellow car enthusiasts, the Duster represented many happy memories. He also had a lifelong love of music from the 60’s and 70’s, and could often be found listening to his favorite songs.

Those who knew Curt will remember his quiet strength, dependable nature, and kind heart. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and never expected anything in return. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, and they returned that affection with countless memories that will be cherished forever.

Raised in the Lutheran faith, Curt's relationship with the Lord was central to his life. He read from the Bible each day. His faith was evident in the way he lived, and the Lord was always first in his life. Curt later attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. During the final month of his life, Curt felt called to deepen his faith and began preparing to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church. As his illness progressed, Father Josh came to the hospital where Curt was baptized, received his First Holy Communion, and was anointed. Curt found peace knowing God would soon call him home and free him from pain. Surrounded by Tina and strengthened by his faith in Jesus Christ, he embraced these final gifts of grace with peace and hope. Tina takes comfort in God's promise that they will one day be reunited.

Curt is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Tina; sister, Carol Mitchell; sister-in-law, Sherry (Keith) Keller; aunts, Carolyn Marthaller and Hedwig LaRocque; sister-in-law, Helen Seelye-Berger; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews, cousins, extended family, and numerous dear friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness and unwavering love.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Helen Maas; infant brother, Carlton; parents-in-law, Duane and Betty Seelye; niece, Carrie Erhardt; and brother-in-law, partner in mischief, and best buddy, Duane Seelye.

Curt's legacy is one of quiet devotion—to his wife, his family, his faith, and the simple joys of life. His steady presence, generous heart, and kind spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
