Obituary

Cory Coon, 47, of Bismarck, formerly of Wakpala, SD/SRST, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2026 in Mandan, ND.

Cory was born the son of Douglas and Valerie (Cadotte) Coon on January 17, 1979 in Bismarck, ND during an unpredictable blizzard.

Growing up in Wakpala, he spent his early years going out to the ranch, spending time with Grandma Melda and Grandpa Ray, being his biggest babysitters while I (mom) worked at the school, and Doug (dad) traveled to Fort Yates, ND for work at BIA Roads Dept. Grandma and Grandpa were always happy to see him early in the mornings. As he grew older, Cory got to hang out at the ranch with all his cousins who would be out to play, ride horses, chase chickens, and get into some kind of mischief.

By the age of four, he began Head Start Program and went into kindergarten the following year and continued up to eighth grade at Wakpala. The family moved to Mobridge at the end of his 8th grade school year in 1988. Cory attended school in Mobridge from 9th grade through his senior year.

After finishing school, he left to Vermillion for a short time before moving on to Sioux City, IA, working on the riverboat. After that job, he returned to Mobridge and applied at Northern State College, attending for a year in 2002.

While attending Northern State, Cory met up again with Patricia Geary, who also graduated from Mobridge the same year. As time passed, in 2006, Cory and Patty introduced us to their daughter, Sasha Coon. She arrived on April 6 during a thunder and lightning rainstorm in Aberdeen, SD.

After living in Aberdeen for a period of time, they moved to Milford, IL after a short time being in Estherville, IA working at various jobs. After a year or so passed, during the summer of 2009, we were notified of the arrival of their second daughter, Sahara Coon, born July 14 in Bismarck, ND.

Years later, Cory had three more beautiful children: two boys, Lorenzo and Niko, and one girl, Bianca, along with a stepdaughter, Daysha. All his special angels.

Some of Cory’s best interests in life happened to be his kids (#1 of course), football, basketball, disc golf, summer, beaches and swimming, grilling, music, hanging with friends, and snow.

Cory will be remembered most for his compassion for people, family, his kids, and all his friends. He was certainly one of a kind, a unique and truthful person, true to his word. Respectful to anyone he met, and would strike up a conversation with anyone he happened to meet or greet.

One of the most priceless things about Cory that we will always remember the most is his loud, heartfelt laugh. Once you heard it, you would stop just to see or hear what he was laughing about. Especially when it came to his kids or friends. You knew then either something happened or was about to happen. He would take what you said or did and throw a joke out about it, check your face for a response then let that big hard laugh go. He was such a jokester in that way much like his dad!

“I will carry your laughter in the quiet of my heart, a melody of joy that will never depart.”

Cory is survived by his mother, Valerie (Cadotte) Coon; father, Douglas Coon of Mobridge, SD; daughters, Sasha Coon (Mandan, ND), Sahara Coon (Center, ND), Bianca Coon (Bismarck, ND); sons, Lorenzo Coon and Niko Coon (Bismarck, ND); first cousins, Jake and Juanita Crasco (Beaver Creek, Montana);stepdaughter, Daysha; sister, Tanya Cadotte; nephew, Jake Cadotte; uncles, Raymond Cadotte Jr., Albert Cadotte, Anthony Stricker (Wakpala, SD), Harlan Cadotte Sr. (Rapid City, SD); aunts, Amelia (Cadotte) Brewer (Aberdeen, SD), Stella (Cadotte) Swiftbird (Belene, New Mexico), Cheryl Cadotte (Wakpala, SD); numerous cousins and many friends; and his beloved cat, Moon.

Cory is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Raymond Cadotte Sr. and Melda (Demery) Cadotte; paternal grandparent, Arlene (Crasco) Anderson; uncles, Charles Cadotte Sr., Milo Cadotte, Nicholas Cadotte; Lloyd Coon; aunts, Sylvia Bryant, Victoria Roberts, Mary Jane Campbell; and Kathryn Cadotte in infancy.

“Your legacy is the love you gave and the lives you touched.” “Rest in Peace; it’s all good my son”
