Katie was born on November 19th, 1922, to John and Magdelina (Kuntz) Schwartz in Odense, ND, as the fifth of thirteen children. She was raised in a humble farmhouse where she learned both the value and rewards of hard work. She married Anton Heintz on October 22nd, 1940, in Odense, and they made their home on a small farm near Solen, ND. She became a tireless farmwife, raising her family, milking cows by hand, hauling hay with the men, and performing the innumerable daily chores of living on the farm. Katie was known for her hospitality; she loved hosting parties at her home where everyone felt welcome. She loved playing card games of all kinds, including pinochle and poker, and enjoyed knocking down pins at the bowling alley. Her strong faith and Catholic upbringing were evident in her life (and in her angel figurine collection) and prayer was a source of comfort and courage for Katie during more trying times. Katie would often be heard quietly reciting prayers as she moved through her daily routine. Throughout Katie’s hospitalizations and when she moved to the Baptist Home, the healthcare staff always enjoyed and remarked on her sense of humor, positive attitude, and bright spirit. Above all, Katie held her family as the center of her life; she was affectionately called “Grandma Katie” by friends and family alike and will be forever loved and missed by all who were fortunate to know her.

Katie will be deeply missed by her daughters, Leona (Nick) Heinert, Fort Rice, ND, and Lavon “Bonnie” (Darryl) Hatzenbuhler, Bismarck, ND; six grandchildren, Bud (Becky) Heinert, Ric Heinert, John (Elicia) Reis, Jerilyn Reis, Thomas Hatzenbuhler, and Sarah (Will) Kucera; three great-grandchildren, Nikki (Rob) Wegner, Nancy (Lee) Nelson, and Anna Reis; one great-great-grandchild, Wyatt Wegner; sisters, Betty Kuntz and Josie Leingang, both of Napa, CA; brother, Leo (Stephenia) Schwartz, Mandan, ND; sisters-in-law, Delores Schwartz, CA, and Frances Schwartz, Bismarck, ND, along with many nieces and nephews.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anton, who died on June 23rd, 1999; daughter, Lillian (Gerald) Reis; sisters, Sally (Joe) Saunter and Margaret (Alvin) Rader; brothers, Jake (Eva) Schwartz, Paul (Elsie) Schwartz, Tom (Tillie) Schwartz, Fred Schwartz, Michael Schwartz, Adam Schwartz, and John (Ann) Schwartz.
