Carol Brown

November 8, 1939 — July 24, 2025

Mandan

Carol Brown, age 85, died Thursday, July 24th at Sanford Hospice House in Fargo, after a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church in Mandan at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 31st.

Carol was born Darlene Carol Annette Lovegren, to Claus and Mayme Lovegren on November 8, 1939, in Havre, MT.

Carol was the youngest of 5 children and was fiercely protected by her 4 brothers; Wayne, Donald, Richard and Lynn. She grew up in Grand Forks and attended Grand Forks public schools, graduating from Grand Forks Central High School in 1957. Carol attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Nursing in 1961. She then went on to work at the State Hospital in Jamestown as a Registered Nurse, where she was reacquainted with her soon-to-be-husband, Malcolm.

Malcolm and Carol were married June 15th, 1963, in Jamestown, and moved back to Grand Forks where she worked at the UND Student Health services while Malcolm finished Law School. Carol and Malcolm have two children, Christopher (Jodi) and Stephanie (Bret Lathrop).

Malcolm and Carol lived in Jamestown, Grand Forks, Bismarck and eventually moved to their longtime residence in Mandan.

Carol raised her children and when they were off to school she volunteered her time to the boards of Mandan Hospital and Heartview Foundation, where she served as President of both boards.

She picked up her nursing career after the kids were gone, having to study for and retake her test, and worked at Archway Mental Health Services for many years as an RN.

Carol was a dyed in the wool UND Fighting Sioux fan and had all the Fighting Sioux merchandise she could find. She could spit out the UND School song at the drop of a hat, anytime, and was so very proud of her alma mater.

She really loved spending time at their lake home in northern Minnesota, golfing, Christmas, and all things Scandinavian. Carol was an over-the-top excellent cook and baker, and the cookies (Christmas and others) were gobbled up by all.

She is survived by her best friend Malcolm; her children and their spouses; grandson Cole Lathrop and his fiancée Raelyn Diaz; nieces VickiLynn, Stacey and Tracey; nephews Russell, Leif, and Christian; sisters-in-law, Vicki and Kathe; and her granddog Charlie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, mother-in-law Henrietta, brother-in-law Clayton, and all the grandpups.

Memorials in honor of Carol can be given to the food bank of your choice.
