Bernard was born September 1, 1923 on the family farm near Raleigh, ND to Frank J. Deichert and Martha (Kopp) Deichert. He grew up on the farm and attended school at 2 Mile School, south of Brisbane, ND. Bernard married Joan E. Roll at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Carson, ND, on June 16, 1952.

After marriage, Bernard took over the family farm raising cattle and small grains. Even though it was a lot of hard work and worry, the farm was his pride and joy. In September 1988, Bernard and Joan moved to Mandan. Over the next 8 years or so, he would continue to go to the farm and raise a big vegetable garden. He volunteered at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, helping with the soup kitchen and in other areas of the church. He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus for many years.

Bernard enjoyed a good game of pinochle (race horse). He was always ready to play. He also loved to watch the Minnesota Twins. They were his favorite team. Bernard liked to take short trips around the countryside looking at the wheat fields. A yearly picnic trip to Medora was always enjoyed.

Bernard will be truly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Joan, of 63 years; his daughters, Sara Evenson (Lee Glass), Maricopa, AZ, Norma Epping, Fargo, ND, and Priscilla Kastrow (Bryan), Mandan, ND; his sister, Tecla Koenig, Mandan, ND; his brother and sister-in-law, Edmund and Delores Deichert, Bremerton, WA; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
