Arlene was born on January 9, 1935 to Eric and Mary (Dobowey) Block in McIntosh, SD. She was raised and educated in the McIntosh area. She worked as a cook and waitress before her marriage to James Schick on June 11, 1955 in McIntosh, SD. They moved to the Flasher area and she and James worked together on the farm and raised their family.

Arlene was the "Best Cook". She made the best fried chicken and pork chops. She was well known for her buns that she would bring to every holiday. She always made extras to send home with each family. She raised and butchered her own chickens which she would sell along with fresh eggs to her many customers. She enjoyed working outside, always tending to her flowers and rock gardens. She enjoyed collecting rooster figurines, salt and pepper shakers and antique dishes which she displayed proudly. She would often be seen going on her walks especially on the golf course where she would search the creek and rough for golf balls. She enjoyed many trips to the casino with her husband and enjoyed playing the slot machines. Arlene enjoyed watching the birds and would make sure her birdbaths and feeders were full. She was well known for her outside holiday decorating, she enjoyed the fun of putting up all her beautiful decorations for all to enjoy. She never forgot a family members birthday. Arlene would always take the time to choose the perfect birthday and other holiday cards to match the person that was receiving it. Above all her grandchildren and her boys were her life, she was always tending to them, making sure they were all happy. She especially loved going to watch her granddaughters play basketball and volleyball.

Arlene will be deeply missed by her husband, James, Flasher, ND; sons, Jeff (Janice), Flasher, ND, George (Karen), Mandan, ND, Jim (Susan), Bismarck, ND and Tom (Brenda), Flasher, ND; 11 grandchildren, Andrew (Alissa), Alexis (Kyle), Allison (Caleb), Arika, Lisa (Ed), Jamie, Tobie, Grace, Jillian, Brad, and Ashley along with 4 great-grandchildren, Reid, Damion, Ian, and Freyja; and her brother, Eddy Block, McIntosh, SD.
