Ann was born on February 19, 1922 in Raleigh, ND to Dennis and Gratiana (Kopp) Wingenbach. She was married to Clem Schmidt until his passing. She later had her son, Linn, with Anthony Thomas. Ann was employed with Cloverdale Meats in Mandan. After moving to St. Paul, Minnesota she worked at Applebaum’s grocery meat department, then later at Ellison Meats. She was a member of the Minneapolis Meat Cutters Union. Often times you would find Ann doing what she loved, gardening, especially her flowers and vegetables, canning, cooking, or making her homemade soups. She had many good friends who she loved sharing good times and meals with. When she was able she enjoyed going to the casino and playing her nickel machines. As part of her community she was a life member of VFW Auxiliary and St. Paul Food Shelf Program volunteer. Although later in life, Ann developed impaired vision, she always maintained a positive attitude and continued to have an excellent memory for details. Her favorite saying was, “For everything there is a reason.” Ann was very grateful to the ND State Library and its services for the vision impaired.
Leaving with loving memories, her son, Linn (Peggy) Thomas, of Mandan; sister-in-law, Cordella Wingenbach; many nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
She is preceded in death by young son, Larry; her husband, Clem Schmidt; Linn’s father, Anthony Thomas; her sisters, Isabell, Lydia, and Victoriana; brothers, Emil, Norbert, and Edwin.
