Obituary

Mathias "Matt" L. Erhardt, 84, Mandan, passed away May 10, 2017 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, May 15, 2017 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Msgr. Chad Gion as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Bismarck with Military Honors provided by the Bismarck VFW Post #1326.

Visitation will be held Sunday, May 14, 2017 from 3:00-7:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 5:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Matt was born to Mathias and Minnie (Barth) Erhardt on October 31, 1932 in Hazelton, ND. He was raised and educated in Hazelton graduating in 1952. He worked at Fode's General Store from the age of 10 all the way through High School. Matt enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 6, 1952. He was stationed at San Antonio Lackland Air Force Base and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AK until March, 1956, when he was honorably discharged. He moved to Minneapolis, MN and worked for Honeywell. In August of 1956 he returned to Hazelton to take care of his ailing mother. On August 10, he met the love of his life, Angie Moch. They were married on December 27, 1956. This love story continued for 60 years. He taught in rural schools for 2 years after receiving a permit from Valley City State. In 1958 Matt began his journey as a ND State Highway Patrolman. He was stationed in Mott, ND until September of 1962 when he transferred to Bismarck, ND until his retirement in 1988. While working as a patrolman, he worked towards his Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Mary and continued his education towards a Master's Degree. In 1988, Matt began substitute teaching for Bismarck Public Schools. He was then hired at Wachter Junior High School after 6 months of substitute teaching and was there for 2 years until he transferred to Hughes Junior High School. He continued teaching until his retirement in 1995. During his teaching career, he was elected County Commissioner for Morton County. He retired his commission responsibilities after 14 years of service. He will be dearly missed and eternally remembered.

Matt will be deeply missed by his lovely wife, Angie Erhardt; daughters, Constance (David) Leschak, Plymouth, MN, Vanessa (Dallas) Kemmer, Bismarck, ND, Pamela (Charles) Doll, New Salem, ND and Tienne (Bryce) Anderson, Kayeta, AZ; sons, Mathias (Cindy), Mandan, ND and Brian, Forsyth, MT; 14 grandchildren, Jesse Erhardt, Angela Morrell, Brandon Erhardt, Aaron Erhardt, Joey Doll, Zachary Kemmer, Casey Doll, Wesley Doll, Zoe Leschak, MacAllistar Kemmer, Mathias (Ty) Doll, Max Leschak, Alexus Anderson and Alyssa Anderson; 8 great-grandchildren, Cadence Erhardt, Braxton Morrell, Kamden Erhardt, Truett Morrell, Svet, Austynn Morrell, Ruger Erhardt and Henley Kemmer; sisters, Catherine Payne, Phoenix, AZ, Blendina Scherr, Lodi, CA and Pauline York, Georgia; brother, Chris, Dewey, AZ; sisters-in-law, Katherine Erhardt, Benson, MN and Ivy Erhardt, Hazelton, ND along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Mathias and Minnie; parents-in-law, Joseph and Magdalena Moch; sisters in infancy, Bertha and Mary; brothers, George, Joe, Mike, Adam (Naomi), Gabe and Johnny (Caroline) and brothers-in-law, Bill Payne, Rick Scherr and Robert York.
