Roy Severson

January 2, 1926 — December 16, 2014

Roy G. Severson, 88, died December 16, 2014 at his residence in Mandan surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 22, 2014 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, ND with Rev. Charles Heidt as celebrant. Burial will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Mandan VFW Post #707 and American Legion Post #40. Visitation will be held one hour before the funeral service on Monday.

Roy was born on January 2, 1926 during a visit to Kansas City, MO to Sever B. and Gertrude (Dinehart) Severson. Roy was raised and educated in Dunn Center and Dickinson areas. After graduating from high school he started Dickinson State College, but suspended his education to serve in the Army of the United States from 1946-1947, receiving a number of promotions to exit service as a Staff Sergeant. Upon return to the state, he resumed his college career.

Roy married Kay Greff on June 30, 1951 in Valley City, ND. They moved to Mandan in 1959 where Roy was the owner operator of Severson Construction until his retirement in 1978. As Roy and Kay built houses they also built a family. They had five daughters and one son, and just before the retirement in 1978 were blessed with their first grandchildren. They both delighted in having grandchildren and everything they did, they did for family.

It was tough to get Roy to stop swinging a hammer. After retirement from full home building he started remodeling existing homes. Even after some of his grandchildren were having children of their own Roy still did some woodworking. He saw himself as a humble carpenter.

Roy enjoyed visiting with his friends and the many people he knew through his business. He had an exceptional memory and was able to recall names of people and dates of events no matter how long ago it occurred. He loved learning about his ancestry and took particular pride in his connections to presidents and passengers on the Mayflower.

Roy will be deeply missed by daughters, Teresa (Dayton) Larson, Mound, MN, Jeri Severson, Mandan, ND, Leta (Douglas) Eckroth, Phoenix, AZ, Andrea (Robert) Davis, Bismarck, ND and Jolene Severson, Mandan, ND; son, Robert (Josette), Mandan, ND; 9 grandchildren, Jessica, Michael, Rachel, Jaci, Joel, Joy, Christy, Allie, and Sterling; 9 great-grandchildren, Sofia, Ethan, Joseph, Reese, Wyatt, Calvin, Mia, Aaron, and Harmony; sister, Minnie Hein, Huron, SD.
