Roger was born on May 12, 1928 to Richard A. and Adela (Banning) Mahrer in Flasher, ND. He was raised and educated in the Flasher area and graduated from Flasher High School. He married Isabelle Gustin on October 3, 1950, in Flasher where they made their home and raised their children. Roger worked as a parts manager at the family owned John Deere business in Flasher for 32 years. He was the Warehouse Clerk at Mor-Gran-Sou Electric Co-op, Inc. for 20 years, and he was a Maytag repairman for Flasher and the surrounding areas. In his spare time, he mowed the golf course in Flasher. Roger was also active in his community. He was a volunteer fireman, ambulance driver, served on the Flasher City Commission for 2 years, and was an active member of the Flasher Lion’s Club and Flasher Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, serving as Grand Knight. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and playing pool and cards. After Roger moved to Mandan, he worked full time for the Mandan Golf Course. Roger had an Irish sense of humor and would often say, “Always have a knife and matches in your pocket and you will always be prepared for anything.” His family was central in his life, and he attributed his 48 years of sobriety to their love and support. He was a proud and active member of AA and was an addiction counselor, affecting many lives in a positive way. In many instances, people would tell him that he had saved their lives.
