Robert Schwartzbauer

March 11, 1930 — February 1, 2015

Robert J. Schwartzbauer, 84, Mandan, died February 1, 2015 at Benedictine Living Center in Garrison as result of complications from Alzheimer disease.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Shane Campbell as celebrant. Burial will be held at Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 4, 2015 from 4:00-8:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, with a St. Anthony Verein Rosary at 7:00 pm with a Parish Vigil at 7:15 pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Robert was born on March 11, 1930 to George, Sr. and Louise (Gartner) Schwartzbauer in St. Anthony, ND. He was raised and educated in the St. Anthony area. Robert married Bertha Bullinger on June 4, 1956 in Huff, ND. Robert was a heavy equipment operator and worked for Morton County for 40 years until his retirement. He then went to work for Northern Improvement and the Schoonover Brother’s Construction along with farming with his brother-in-law and uncle along with many other farmers in the area. Robert was a 53 year member of the St. Anthony Verein.

Robert enjoyed working outdoors along with hunting, fishing, camping and farming. In the fall family and neighborhood times were spent making sausage using a special recipe that had been passed down through the generations. He had a unique sense of humor and enjoyed playing a practical joke and a good game of cards which usually involved a little cheating. He will always hold a special place in so many hearts and will be missed by all who knew him.

Robert had a big heart and was a loving and caring man. His friends were important to him and he would do anything to help if asked. He was a hardworking man who always gave more than was expected of him as many knew Robert was never late. His family was central in his life and he loved and cared for them with all his heart. He loved being around his grandchildren, family and friends. More recently, a special place in his heart was his great-grandchild who he enjoyed during his Alzheimer’s journey.

Robert will be deeply missed by; son, Raymond (Vicky), Huff, ND; daughter, Rosemary (Kenneth) Schmidt, Center, ND; grandchildren, Amy Schwartzbauer, Mikael (fiancée, Jaden Weiss) and Emily Schmidt; great-grandchild, AnnaBelle Schwartzbauer; sister, Dorothy (Larry) Swap, Mandan; brother, Richard (Shirley) and sister-in-law, Alice Schwartzbauer, Mandan and brother-in-law, Gene Dauenhauer, Mandan.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha who died on June 27, 2010; parents; brothers, George who died on January 29, 2015, infant Edward; sister, Frances Dauenhauer and special aunt and uncle, Joe and Eva Lockner.

The family would like to thank the staff at Maple View Memory Care Community East, Bismarck and the Benedictine Living Center of Garrison for the wonderful care they gave Robert.
