Robert Kirchmeier

Robert G. “Corky” Kirchmeier, 81, Mandan, formerly of New Salem, ND passed away June 12, 2016 at Sanford Continuing Care Center on Sunset in Mandan.

Services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 18, 2015 at Peace Church, New Salem, ND with Rev. Joshua Eddy officiating. Burial will be at the Peace Cemetery with Military Honors provided by New Salem American Legion Post # 0091.

Visitation will be held from 4:00-9:00 pm on Friday, June 17, 2016 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Robert was born on August 1, 1934 to Oswald and Amanda (Waechter) Kirchmeier in Medina, ND. He was raised and educated in the New Salem area graduating from New Salem High School in 1952. He was a proud member of the United States Army serving until 1961. Robert married Virginia Schmidt on March 17, 1959. They made their home in New Salem where they were both active in the community. Robert worked for over 25 years for Stayton’s Texaco/Exxon, formerly Frank’s Texaco. Robert was the owner operator of Corky’s Exxon, Schmidt’s Coffee Shop and Idle Hour Ceramics. He was also one of the founding members of the New Salem Ambulance Service and served as president for 20 years. He was a member of New Salem American Legion, New Salem Fire Department and the New Salem Lion’s Club.

Robert was an outgoing and friendly guy and knew everybody in town. He enjoyed his lakeside trailer at Heart Butte Dam where he spent many hours boating and fishing. He later drove for Bis-Man Transit for several years.

Robert will be deeply missed by daughter, Paula (Bill) Klug, New Town, ND; step-daughter, Pam Schott, Glyndon, MN; step-son, Dale Christensen, Williston, ND; special friend, Linda Ormiston, Bismarck, ND; grandchildren, Brad, Sarah, Candie, Bobby, Annie and Billie, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great- grandchildren; sister, Carol Erhardt, New Salem, ND; brothers, Jack (Nancy), Mitchell, SD, Jerome (Pat), Bryan, TX and sister-in-law, Ida Kirchmeier, Williston, ND along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia who died in 1985; his parents; his sister, Lorraine (Clarence) Toepke; brothers, Kenneth and Donald and brother-in-law, Ralph Erhardt.
