Dick (Richard M.) Tokach passed away on November 9, 2014 at Sanford Continuing Care Center off Sunset in Mandan, North Dakota

Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 11:00 am at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Msgr. Chad Gion as celebrant.

Visitation will begin Tuesday, November 11, 2014 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, ND with a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 4:00 pm followed by St. Anthony Verein and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 pm and parish vigil at 7:15 pm at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan ND.

Burial will take place at Mandan Union Cemetery, Mandan, North Dakota following the funeral service.

Dick was born on October 13, 1932 to Matt and Viola (Weiss) Tokach at St. Anthony, ND. He grew up on the family farm, which was homesteaded by his grandfather in 1898, and returned to the farm after attending Mandan High School and North Dakota State University. Dick married Theresa Elter on October 15, 1955. Together they created Tokach Angus Ranch and instilled the love of agriculture into their family. Dick was proud when his sons joined him as working partners. Currently, all of his children and grandchildren are involved in production agriculture.

Dick was a steward of the land, caretaker of livestock, and a man of integrity. He believed in public service. He served in many areas of the livestock industry including the National Cattleman’s Association, National Beef Promotion and Research Board, National Livestock and Meat Board, and North Dakota Beef Commission. He also served as President of the North Dakota Stockman’s Association and North Dakota Angus Association.

Dick felt a duty to the community. He was a Morton County Commissioner, North Dakota State Representative, Mandan School board member, Morton County Fair Board member, and Trustee of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Presently he was a member of the Spirit of Life Church, Knights of Columbus, St. Anthony Verein, and many other organizations.

Dick was a recipient of the North Dakota Stockman’s Top Hand Award and NDSU Saddle and Sirloin Agriculturalist of the Year. He was also honored with the Beef Cattle Improvement Award as Seedstock Producer of the Year, Soil Conservation Achievement Award, FFA Honorary State Farmer’s Award, and North Dakota Angus Association Man of the Year Award. In 2013 Dick and Theresa were inducted into the North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame.

Dick is survived by his wife, Theresa, five children and twelve grandchildren: Richard (Kathy Graner), St. Anthony, children Rebecca (Alex Acheson), Elk Point SD, Ben (Natalie Laubner), Mandan, and Renae, St. Anthony; Amy (Matt Benz) children Justin Benz, Beulah, and Cassie (Spencer Jones) great grandchildren Ty, Hayden and Hadley, Wamego, KS; Paul (Marlene Neibauer) children Jennifer and Owen, Mandan; Mike (Lisa Thomas) children Sage, Rogan, Fiona, Abilene KS; and Brad (Nita Rinde) children Lane and Cody, St. Anthony. He is also survived by a sister, Ruth Ann Falk, Eugene, Oregon and brother, Bill Tokach. Dick is preceded in death by his parents Matt and Viola Tokach.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the North
Dakota Stockman’s Foundation or the Morton County 4-H Council.
