Ray was born at home during a blizzard on January 24, 1950 to Joseph and Margaret (Zins) Hoff. He was raised and educated in the Flasher area, graduating from Flasher High School. He married Janice Nelson on June 26, 1971 in Flasher. They raised their children on their farm and worked hard as farmers and ranchers.

Ray loved the outdoors and nature. His greatest pleasure besides his family was going for a ride along the country side whether it was riding one of his horses or driving his prized team of percheron horses and wagon. He was also a long - time member and current president of the West River Teamsters Wagon Train. Ray was a talented welder and mechanic. If anything could be fixed or built he could do it. He had a special talent when it came to working with metal he could design and build any type of trailer. He enjoyed many things about the ranching life including calving, hauling hay in his semi- truck or working cattle with his neighbors and friends. He loved driving the Ranger to the pasture to check the cattle or to the field to look at the crops.

He always had a smile on his face and was a kind and generous man who was willing to lend a hand to any neighbor that needed help. He would enjoy visiting with all his friends over a “quick cup of coffee”. As good humored and generous as Ray was his family came first no matter what. He loved his family beyond measure.
