LaVyrl Feland

September 16, 1939 — November 11, 2015

LaVyrl (Wolff) Feland, 76, died on November 11, 2015 at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center following a recent diagnosis of terminal brain cancer. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at First Lutheran Church of Mandan, 408 9th Street NW, Mandan, ND with burial to follow at Mandan Union Cemetery.

LaVyrl was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on September 16, 1939 to Albert and Marie (Steckman) Wolff. Raised in Bismarck, LaVyrl graduated from Bismarck High School in 1957. LaVyrl attended Bismarck State College for one year before going to work for Lahr & Lahr, Inc., an insurance and real estate firm.

On November 16, 1963, LaVyrl married Marshall Feland. They lived on a farm southeast of Almont where they raised four children: Cynthia, Curtis, Clint and Cathleen. Mom was always our biggest fan and most vocal advocate. She was a cheerleader for everything we did; attending every high school and college musical and sporting event and volunteering endless hours baking, sewing costumes, making sets and props, or any other tasks that were needed to get the job done. While raising us, Mom was active in church activities, serving as superintendent of the Sunday school, and working with the Luther League youth group, Sunday school choir and ladies organization. Mom was never one to do anything halfway and while we may be biased, some of the church programs she put together seemed more like Off-Broadway productions.

When mom wasn’t involved in a project for one of us, she was working side by side with our dad in their business, Marshall Lumber. In 1992, Mom and Dad expanded their lumber company by purchasing the former Jenning’s Lumber Company and moved to Mandan. Mom called herself the bookkeeper but that does not come close to adequately describing her role; a role that will never be replaced.

Although she never officially retired, Mom took time out to travel. Most recently, she helped celebrate her youngest sister Jeanette’s 50th wedding anniversary in Myrtle Beach, dipping her toes for the first time in the Atlantic Ocean. A member of the Bismarck/Mandan Sweet Adelines River Rhapsody Chorus, Mom had many great adventures attending workshops, and competitions. She especially enjoyed attending the national competitions and would entertain us long after her trips with stories of their adventures. Mom’s adventures also included many trips with our dad, and her grandchildren and us. Visiting our nation’s capital and the Big Apple were two-bucket list trips she made with her eldest sister Arlene.

During the summer months, Mom was an avid gardener with a particular penchant for petunias and geraniums. Pots of flowers and perennials from her grandmother adorned the yard. In the winter, Mom spent evenings completing sewing, cross-stich, needlepoint and knitting projects that proudly adorn our homes. Her granddaughters were fortunate enough to learn these skills during sleepovers with grandma.

Music was ever present in Mom’s life and bought her great joy. Besides singing in the car with us as kids, mom sang for many community events, and with church choirs in addition to the Sweet Adelines. For us, the notes will never sound as sweet without her. She will be profoundly missed and is survived by her husband Marshall, children: Cynthia Feland, Bismarck; M. Curtis (Jamane) Feland, Almont; Clint (Bev) Feland, Bismarck; and Cathleen Feland, Mandan; her grandchildren: Cade, Paige, Desirae, Christina, Elaine, Seth, Celise, and Brett; great grandchild Ryker; sisters: Arlene (Harold) Smith, Omaha, NE; and Jeanette (Bruce) Miller, Chippewa Falls, WI; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Central Dakota Humane Society, Mandan, ND.
