Gwendolyn Mushik

July 15, 1918 — July 6, 2014

Gwen A Mushik, 95, a lifelong resident of Mandan ND passed away July 6, 2014. Services will be held at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 10:30 a.m., with the Reverend Jared Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m. with her husband John.
Gwen was born in Calgary, Alberta July 15, 1918 to Henry & Alice Dahners. She moved to Mandan with her parents and sister Lucile when she was two years old. She graduated from Mandan High School, and attended one year at St. Catherine’s College in St. Paul, MN.
Gwen Married John A. Mushik after he returned home from WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the National Guard 188th Field Artillery. After their marriage he began to manage Mushik Shoe Store where Gwen was his moral support at the store throughout those thirty years of ownership. The Red Wing shoe store in Bismarck was purchased in 1971 by John and Gwen and is now owned by the Mushik family. After John’s retirement, the two became avid walkers whether it was on the streets of Mandan, or at Kirkwood Mall. Everywhere they would go people would recognize them and wave or stop to visit. Even into her 90’s people would come up to her and say that they remembered the two of them together walking. Each winter for seven years they stayed at Disney World for two weeks where they continued those walks around the theme parks and flowered walk-ways. Until a week before her passing, Gwen lived by herself in the house she and John built in 1956 overlooking Mandan-needing only the help of St. Alexius’ Homecare who cleaned, got groceries, and chatted with her. The Sunday drives & lunches with her daughter Becky and Thursday dinners prepared by Becky’s husband Bob were very much anticipated as was her daily Frappuccino from Starbucks. The days with her grandchildren as they grew up were much treasured. As her husband John would be teaching them how to build things in his workshop, she would be cooking their favorite meals and desserts. Then as the great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren came along the cookies that she made were frequently mailed to them, along with Bosca Bread at Easter.
She asked little more than to be at her husband’s side and to love each of their offspring, always showing them much compassion, patience, and kindness. Those treasured memories will be cherished by all of her family: Daughter & son-in-law Becky & Bob Roesler, Bismarck; three grandchildren- Kim (Corey) Dahl, Fargo; Gail (Tim) Meland, Brookings, SD, Craig (Lea) Huelskamp, Rapid City, SD; five great grandchildren-Andrew (Gina) Dahl, Britta (Chris) Kopp, Steven (Allison) Meland, Marie Meland, and Dylan Huelskamp and four great-great grandchildren. Also surviving, two sisters in law- Betty Dahners and Marilyn Mushik-Skantz, nephews- Ross Mushik, Wayne, Jeff & Chris Dahners; nieces-Kathleen Luck and Shelly Mushik, and very special neighbors, Tille Kopp and her son Peter, and Jason & Abbie Kresbach.
Preceded in death by her husband John, who died in 2001; her parents, her sister Lucile (Bob) Luck and her brother Greg Dahners.Visitation will from 5pm-7pm on Wednesday July 9, 2014 at Weigel Funeral Home in Mandan and will continue Thursday at the church one hour before services. Services will be at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with lunch at the church immediately following. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at 1 pm, Thursday.
