Tony was born on November 14, 1927 to Frank and Magdalena (Kessel) Engelhardt in Dickinson, ND. He was raised and educated in Dickinson. Tony entered the US Navy in 1946 and was honorably discharged in March 1953. He attended Dickinson State University receiving a BS in Education and later a Master’s Degree from the University of Montana in Bozeman.

After returning from the service Tony built a small home for his mother in Dickinson where Tony's magnetic charm finally caught the attention of Diana Huncovsky and they were married on August 1st, 1950 in Dickinson. Tony and Diana started their married life in Streeter, ND where Tony had his first teaching job. They moved to New Salem where he was a teacher, coach, and administrator for 17 years. The family moved to Mandan in 1970 where he finished his teaching and administrative career in 1989 after 18 years with the Mandan School System. He was well respected as a superintendent, principal, teacher, and coach. He enjoyed coaching many sports, volunteered with Special Olympics, was a member of the American Legion, Elk’s, and Knights of Columbus. Tony loved to garden, fish, golf, and watch all sports. He would share his roses throughout the community of Mandan. He was always volunteering and would never turn down anyone in need. Tony dearly loved his wife and family. Dad’s philosophy was everyone had “Potench.” We all will miss his smile and contagious giggle.
