Full History

The history of Weigel Funeral Home and Cremation Service dates back to 1881 when Hiram Lyon settled in Mandan and purchased property once owned by the Northern Pacific Railroad. Construction on his home, which is now the funeral home, was designed by a New York architect and copied after a Greek temple. A number of features are unique to the house, including the foundation, which is two-and-a-half-foot thick field rock. Massive studs and tongue-in-groove subsiding set in a diagonal pattern give the structure strength. All of the wood was hand cut and much of it had to be specially ordered. The home was completed in 1904.

After a series of prominent owners, Hector and Margaret Hoenig purchased the home in 1956, when it was remodeled to be used as a funeral home. The Hoenigs came to Mandan from Minnesota, where Hector had been working in funeral service for many years.

Tom Weigel later purchased the funeral home and completed a remodel in the 1980s. In December of 2000, the funeral home was acquired by the Vertin family. With additional renovations in 2011, a total of 1,700 square feet was added and special attention was given to maintaining the history and atmosphere of a warm, welcoming residential home.
